When connecting a Chromebook to external speakers, for example, a smartboard, Audio may default to the device's internal speakers.

To change this, open the system tray in the bottom right, find the sound control.



Click the arrow button to the right of the sound control bar. This will open the audio settings. Then, in the menu under Output, select the external speaker. The name of this will differ depending on the audio device connected.
